In Greene County district court Holly Rae Plummer, 26, of Boone was granted a deferred judgment after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. She was placed on informal probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. A judgment was entered for a $315 civil penalty. She must pay restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees not to exceed $1,200. Court costs were $215.53. A charge of illegal possession of a prescription drug was dismissed. A charge against Plummer of possession of drug paraphernalia in magistrate court was also dismissed. Dennis Ray Hagen, 62, of Jefferson was sentenced to two days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- first offense, amended from OWI- second offense. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail time. Hagen was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge; one-half will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted license. Court costs were $140. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Andrew Steven Gathercoal, 26, of Grand Junction was granted a deferred judgment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was placed on informal probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year. He has already completed a substance abuse evaluation. A judgment was entered for a $100 civil penalty. He must pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees not to exceed $600. Court costs were $142.20. A companion case in magistrate court in which Gathercoal was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed with $95 court costs assessed to him. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Ryan Douglas Patterson, 40, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. The prison term was suspended. If he eventually serves it, it will be consecutive to terms in three Greene County magistrate cases. Patterson was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for two years. He was fined $625 with a $93.75 surcharge. He must pay restitution not to exceed $600 for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $136 court costs. Charges of willful injury and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident were dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Marlene Eleanor Anderson, 51, of Jefferson was sentenced to 10 days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. The jail sentence is consecutive to the sentence in an OWI case. No fine or surcharge was entered. Anderson must pay restitution not to exceed $600 for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs. A second case against her, initiated two weeks after this case, and also on a charge of driving while license barred, was dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Nicholas Weber, 20, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana- second offense with prior violation other than possession of marijuana. The prison term was suspended; if he serves it eventually, it will be consecutive to terms in three other Greene County cases. Weber was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for two years. He shall reside in a residential correctional facility for 180 days or until maximum benefits are obtained. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. He was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge. He must pay restitution not to exceed $1,000 for his court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Larry John Hovick, 45, of Jefferson was sentenced to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty at arraignment to a charge of OWI- second offense. All but seven days of the jail time was suspended and he was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. He may complete the DMACC 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of two days of the jail time. Hovick was fined $1,875 with a $281.25 surcharge. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignment as follows: Brandon Lee Ferguson, 22, of Jefferson, possession of methamphetamine; Alex Garron Treft, 29, of Grand Junction, eluding; Angel Vaughan, 38, of Marshalltown, possession of marijuana, operating while under the influence, and eluding while participating in a felony or causing injury; and Shanda Marie Fredericksen, 35, of Gowrie, criminal mischief- fourth degree. Trial dates were set for March 2 in every case.
Cases were initiated in district court during the week ending Dec. 18 as follows: Abigail Sturgeon, 21, of Ames, possession of marijuana; Tristan Stefan Knudsen, 24, of Ames, possession of marijuana; Terence Izauh Bingley, 21, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana; and Nicholas John Thies, 36, of Arthur, possession of marijuana.
